Brush your teeth well, not hard - and don't forget to floss

Relieving the pain of sensitive teeth begins with proper brushing and good oral hygiene, according to Nico Geurs, D.D.S.,
assistant professor of dentistry at UAB.

"Sensitive teeth are caused by exposed root surfaces, usually the result of
improper brushing or gum disease," Geurs said.

"Most people brush too hard, which isn't effective at all. The proper way is to use a soft bristle toothbrush and brush
gently, using a sweeping technique. And don't forget to floss. Brushing alone is not enough. Flossing is actually more
effective than brushing in preventing gum disease."
